Over the next couple of weeks StudioTim will be adding pages that were previously housed on our old-StudioTim layout. First of these posts is my 1/144 Gundam Avalanche Exia. I spend some time doing an initial review and then add my thoughts in the analysis. This is not meant to be an in-depth review of Gundams. If you’re looking for that please visit the larger Gundam websites.

Avalanche Exia

Initial Thoughts:

Avalanche Exia is not from the Gundam 00 anime series despite being made into a 1/144 model. It originates from the original manga volumes, although I’m unsure as to where exactly. The Gundam is specially designed for atmospheric entry and exit, which is why you see extra shoulder blades and leg joints in place. The colour scheme is easily distinguished with the other Exia models, showing off the light blue and white colours. After construction, it looks extremely sturdy and has a lot of parts packed into a 1/144 frame.

Pictures and Analysis

The upper torso pads move with the arms giving off a “protective shield” effect for the chest. You can see that the small yellow plating is actually attached to the arms rather than the torso, which makes for a pretty cool effect. I really like how Avalanche Exia has positionable shoulders; they can open up and close to give off that Atmospheric Entry/Exit scenario. Inside each shoulder pad there’s a yellow cylinder; I’m not sure what it’s for, but one can assume it’s designed to be some sort of compressor for dissipating heat.

Avalanche Exia

Avalanche Exia comes with 4 beam sabers, two GN knives–one short and one long one, and his main retractable GN Sword/Gun combination. Although it’s hard to tell in the photo, the two GN knives are located on the left side of his back while the 4 beam sabers are on his shoulders for easy sheathing/unsheathing. You can see that Avalanche Exia comes with extra leg features. These large blue pieces of armor detach from the body and can connect to the bottom of his soles. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the “Atmosphere” mode to show how the leg plates connect to his feet.

Avalanche Exia

The knees of Avalanche Exia are extremely thick. They contain the same cylinder effect on the shoulders, which is why they protrude from his thighs. Again you can see how the colour scheme fits well with the whole Exia theme. Normally Exia doesn’t have any yellow on it, but I kind of like how it emphasizes the special parts on this model.

Avalanche Exia

That’s about it for my analysis. Since this was taken from an old post, the photos aren’t really detailed and don’t show some of the features that I wanted to show. I will try my best to add more detailed photos next time. Thanks for looking at this review. Enjoy the last couple of photos.
